I've developed a deep regard for the symbolic significance of these images and so was nonplussed when, for a period, I frequently encountered their waking-life counterparts dead: the crow I found on a morning walk through a neighborhood park; the rat I found in my mother's backyard. I was amazed at how artfully Nature had already arranged them. That I sometimes cannot see what I am looking at, and am compelled to rely more on what I can feel, underscores a — for me, poignant — link between personal experience and abstract transpersonal metaphors. This link is intrinsic to both artistic and spiritual inquiries. Both fuel my search for equanimity and insight; both reveal their own peculiar occlusions and perceptual distortions. Alluding to the physically-infused spirituality of medieval Christian women, Praying with My Fingers describes my approach to art-making as a many-tiered quest for guidance into my artistic, spiritual, and cultural identities. The work for this show traces my efforts to feel for often invisible structures that shape—or distort—women’s self perceptions: in particular, artistic and spiritual paradigms that occlude feminine experiences. Desire, passion, creativity, and union, take on conflicted connotations when perceived through the lenses of art, spiritual practice, and our cultural assumptions about womanhood. Barely discerned, and often thwarted, these original impulses can become strangely mis-grown or self-devouring. I explore these states through using such disparate materials as tea leaves, white latex house paint, and hot glue. Materials, like yearnings, are stuffed away and yet relentlessly obtrude. White paint effaces and cracks. Hot glue sears and fuses. Tea leaves clot, mottle, and stain. Life’s flow is excerpted and discarded in the unseen periphery. More than mere portrayals of obscure suffering my works are soft-fingered, wordless acts of tenderness and mending. Intensely hued and gestural, my paintings often suggest natural forms and processes, yet elide from abstract shapes and suggestions of calligraphy, to evocations of water, geological formations, cracks, and veiled, lit portals. I endeavor to create visual events that feel mysteriously known or remembered, but not yet encountered. For years I have been drawn to visual similarities between various natural phenomena — a crack, a drip, a nerve, a blood vessel, a bolt of lightning or a trail of light — and human marks and communication systems such as Asian calligraphy. In these unities of form I find essences of separation and distinction. A uniform surface cracks to reveal an unexpectedly complex interior. A night sky full of latent energy is cleft suddenly by a bolt of lightning and a landscape is seen anew. A blank page is hewn into a symbolic story by a few deft strokes. This transformative tension informs my painting process. In the early stages of painting, forms are indistinct and undefined. Materials and strokes accrue, directions are sought and lost. Works might be set aside for weeks, months, or even a few years until something in me enables (or allows) the painting to resolve itself. Much the way memory redrafts awkward first experiences into the narrative wholeness of one’s history, previously frustrating layers and marks may be excavated, cracked, scored or glazed in such a way
